Kimberly Gildner

For the last nine years, I’ve held the position of Attorney Referee in the Domestic and Juvenile Division of the 26th Circuit Court. I’ve seen firsthand the emotional impact probate court can have on families and children. My promise has consistently been one of active listening, fair treatment, and advocating for the well-being of children. As Probate Judge of Presque Isle County, I promise to continue these principles, ensuring that compassion and fairness guide every decision I make.

FOCUS & VISION

(Kimberly in her own words.)

My work as an Attorney Referee places me at the forefront of some of the most complex challenges facing our court system, all centered around the well-being of children. In cases involving child neglect, abuse, juvenile delinquency, and child support enforcement, I frequently encounter young parents grappling with immense burdens.

Many of these teens and young adults, while embarking on the journey of parenthood, carry the weight of their own troubled pasts. These challenges can include substance abuse and mental health struggles, which can create a cycle of neglect, making intervention absolutely crucial.

However, removing a child from their home is always a last resort. The court, in collaboration with resources like MDHHS, can be a powerful tool for positive change. We can connect these young parents with essential services like counseling, parenting programs, and even job training. While the hard work ultimately lies with them, the court plays a vital role in guiding them towards a brighter future for themselves and their children.

As Probate Judge, I will make safeguarding children my primary objective, and always try to keep families together.

Sometimes there are difficult choices that need to be made. Juvenile delinquency cases present a different set of challenges and triumphs. I've witnessed teenagers, often raised by a single parent and struggling with behavioral issues, overcome significant hurdles during probation. Parental incarceration can further complicate matters, leading to foster care placement.

Yet, with stable environments, counseling, and educational opportunities, these young people can experience remarkable transformations.

Seeing them return home equipped with new skills and a more positive outlook is immensely rewarding. It's a testament to their resilience and a hopeful turning point for their families and communities. Each success story serves as a beacon, highlighting the potential for positive change, even in the most challenging circumstances.

My faith deeply informs this aspect of my work, providing a foundation of hope and compassion that guides my decisions and actions. This foundation will stay with me as Probate Judge.

Fairness and compassion will serve as cornerstones. Every individual in the courtroom brings a unique story and perspective. I believe in listening attentively to all parties involved – the children, the parents, grandparents, social workers, and anyone else who can provide valuable insight into the situation.

I'll also make protecting the vulnerable a core responsibility that extends beyond children. The elderly are also susceptible to exploitation and neglect. Recognizing the challenges faced by each generation allows for a more comprehensive approach to Probate Court, ultimately serving our community better.

As your Probate Judge, my promise is to ensure that every person who comes to Court, regardless of age or circumstance, receives a fair hearing and the support they need to move forward. The power to bring families together, empower young people, and safeguard the well-being of all is what makes this job so important and so meaningful.

That’s why I’m asking for your support in the August 6th primary election.
